Helping your child feel more confident

Quick answer

Confidence is a child's belief that they can try something, cope if it goes wrong, and speak up about it. In children aged 8 to 14 it often shows up unevenly: a child can be bold with friends but quiet in class, or sure in sport but anxious about exams. Confidence grows mostly through small, repeated experiences of trying and managing, not through praise alone. Parents can help by giving real responsibilities, letting children make safe mistakes, and naming effort. The guides below go deeper, and the free confidence check gives a starting picture.

What parents commonly notice

  • Holding back from answering in class or speaking in a group
  • Saying "I can't" before trying something new
  • Relying on a parent to speak for them with adults
  • Getting very upset about small mistakes or corrections

Skills children can practise

  • Speaking up in small, low-pressure moments
  • Trying a task before asking for help
  • Talking kindly to themselves after a mistake
  • Sharing an opinion and explaining why

Questions parents ask

Common questions

Is shyness the same as low confidence?
Not always. Some children are naturally quiet but still willing to try things. It is more worth a closer look when a child regularly avoids things they would like to do.
Does praise build confidence?
Specific praise for effort and choices helps. General praise on its own does less than real chances to try, struggle a little and manage.
